Metal chip processing refers to the method of collecting and treating metal machining wastes with the use of metal crushers, Oil Separators, Dryers for drying chips, metal briquetters and other specialized equipments interconnected with metal chip conveyors, so as to comprise a complete metal chip processing system.
Chips as received from machining operations are wet with coolant & oily, and in this condition can not be re-melted efficiently & economically. While transportation oil spills all over creating environmental issues. Also the melting loss is huge. Hence chip processing is necessary for obtaining maximum recovery and savings. Chips can be melted after processing by primarily three methods,
• Preparing dense “Briquettes” on hydraulic presses.
• Adding chips slowly in vortex of molten metal.
• Direct chips Melting
But in Vortex & Direct chips melting there are several drawbacks.

| The principal of Chip processing systems are to |
• Chip Crusher is used to produce small particles of metal chips
• Centrifuge is used to separate residual coolant and oil from metal chips. The drip free chips may be transported without contaminating the environment, while obtaining huge savings due to reduction in melting losses.
• Further processing of the "dry" chips is done by using Dryer.
• Then separation of iron from the aluminum chips is done by Magnetic Separator
• Metal chip briquetters compress metal chips into a solid briquette form with benefits in material handling and the re-melting process. |

 Chip Crusher
|
Bushy, stringy metal turnings such as those shown above must be crushed into smaller chips to satisfy three needs:
Effective extraction and reclamation of cutting fluids from such material. The use of a Oil Separator requires feed particle size be no larger than about 5 mm
Briquetting of such material requires that feed particle size be no larger than about 5 mm.
Iron particles separation is effective only when chips smaller.
If metal turnings are being processed, it should be crushed or shredded for ease of handling and bulk transportation. Moreover, the price received for such scrap will be enhanced by offering a shoveling grade (sized) chip product to a scrap recycler.

 Oil Separator |
| Wet metal chips containing cutting fluids are fed into conical inlet hopper that passes to the bottom of rotating bowl. The bowl is mounted on shaft and bearing assembly, driven by a non-slip timing belt and sheave assembly and motor. Metal chips and fluids arriving within the bowl are immediately subjected to intense centrifugal force causing both chips and fluids to be thrown against the bowl surface. The arrival of new metal chip feed causes chips already present in the bowl to be displaced further along the bowl surface. As metal chips and fluids arrive at the upper periphery of the bowl, they pass across a wedge wire screen through which cutting fluids pass into a fluid collection chamber for separate collection. Dewatered metal chips pass across the screen, pass to the chip discharge chamber from which they are pneumatically expelled by the airflow generated by fan blades fixed to the top of the rotating bowl. Airborne chips flow through discharge pipe.

 Dryer |
Rotary Dryer / Kiln is used for drying the metal chip. Dryer was directlyfired by LPG Burner. For drying the aluminum chips required temperatureat opposite end of Rotary Kiln is around 200 degree centigrade.The capacity of dryer is depend on the required output capacity. |

 Magnetic Separator |
| Magnetic separators purify ferrous metal from aluminum turning and reclaim products in such materials. They can be installed inside closed chutes, at outlets of chutes and hoppers, or where materials discharge from feeders and conveyors. Its rugged construction is ideal for separating ferrous metal from material such as shredded aluminum turning. Similar in operation, it has a non magnetic outside shell that is driven around an internal stationary magnet. Ferrous metal is magnetically drawn out of the material feed, held against the revolving shell, and released when it reaches a discharge point beyond the magnetic field.
Note:-
Some aluminum particles are transferring along with iron particles during magnetic separation process. So it has to recycle again & again manually till magnetic process is to be complete.
In some chip particles if more percentage of iron occurred then it will transferred to iron particles due to this some aluminum remains in iron chips.
